Water filtration we install
From a single filtered tap at the kitchen sink to a system that treats every tap in the house, a licensed Tap Doctor plumber can supply, fit and later service it.
Whole-house filtration
A point-of-entry system fitted where the water supply enters your property, so filtered water reaches every tap, shower and appliance in the home.
Under-sink drinking filters
A compact system in the kitchen cupboard feeding a filtered tap, for better drinking and cooking water without changing the rest of the house. See under-sink water filters.
Twin and triple cartridge systems
Staged filtration that uses more than one cartridge, for example a sediment stage followed by a carbon stage, so each cartridge does one part of the job.
Sediment filtration
Removes the grit, rust and fine particles that can come through older mains or a bore, protecting taps, appliances and the filters that follow.
Carbon filtration
Targets the chlorine taste and smell that treated mains water can carry, for water that is nicer to drink and cook with.
Filters for your fridge and ice maker
A filtered supply for a plumbed-in fridge or ice maker. See fridge and ice maker plumbing.
What is in Perth’s water
Perth’s scheme (mains) water is treated to be safe to drink, but “safe” and “nice to drink” are not the same thing. These are the things people in Perth most often want to improve.
Chlorine taste and smell
Mains water is disinfected before it reaches your home, and that treatment can leave a chlorine taste or smell. A carbon filter is designed to reduce it.
Hardness and scale
Harder water leaves scale on kettles, shower screens and glassware and inside hot water systems. Hardness varies by supply source and suburb.
Sediment and discolouration
Older pipes and mains work can let grit, rust or cloudiness through. A sediment stage catches it before it reaches your taps and appliances.
Garden bore water
Many Perth homes run a garden bore, and bore water is often high in iron that stains paths, fences and walls. Bore water needs a different setup to mains water, so tell us if you want it treated.
Rainwater tanks
Rainwater collected off a roof needs filtering before it is suitable for drinking. Tell us if a tank is your source so we can talk through the right setup.
Peace of mind
Many households simply want cleaner, better tasting water on tap for their family, without buying bottled water.
Whole-house or under-sink: which suits you?
Both do a good job. The right one depends on whether you want to treat the water for the whole home or just improve what you drink and cook with. Your plumber can price either.
Whole-house (point of entry)
- Filtered water at every tap, shower and appliance
- Fitted where the supply enters the property
- Good if the whole supply has a taste, smell or sediment issue
- Larger job and a higher up-front cost than a single tap
Under-sink (point of use)
- Filtered water at one tap, usually the kitchen
- Compact unit in the cupboard, often with its own filtered tap
- Good if you mainly want better drinking and cooking water
- Lower cost and quicker to fit than a whole-house system
Only after better water at the kitchen sink? See under-sink water filters. Not sure which way to go? Tell us what bothers you about your water when you book online or call, and your plumber will recommend the system that fits your home and budget.
How a whole-house install works
A whole-house system is plumbed into the main supply, so it is a job for a licensed plumber.
We check your water and your supply
Your plumber looks at where the water enters the property, the pipe size, the space available and what you want to improve, then recommends a system.
A firm price before we start
You get a firm price for the system and the install. Nothing starts until you say yes.
Fitted on the main line
The system goes in where the supply enters the home, with isolation valves so cartridge changes are quick and clean.
Cartridge changes done for you
Cartridges need replacing on a schedule so the system keeps working. We can come back and change them when they are due.
What a water filter system costs
We do not quote filtration over the phone, because every home’s supply, pipework and water use is different. These are the things that change the price.
- Size of your home and water useA larger home or household needs a system and cartridges sized to keep good flow at every tap.
- Number of filter stagesA single cartridge costs less than a twin or triple system that treats more than one thing.
- The system you chooseDifferent systems and cartridges are rated for different jobs and have different up-front and ongoing costs.
- Where it is fittedEasy access where the supply enters the house is quicker than a tight or awkward spot.
- Extra plumbingIsolation valves, a bypass or moving pipework can add to the job.
- Ongoing cartridgesFactor in replacement cartridges over the life of the system. Your plumber will tell you how often they need changing.
No call-out fee in business hours
You pay for the work you agree to. If you decide not to go ahead, there’s nothing to pay during business hours.
A firm price before we start
Your plumber looks at the job, explains the options and gives you a firm price. Nothing starts until you agree, and that’s the price you pay.
Signs a water filter would help your home
A filter is worth considering if any of these sound familiar.
Your tap water tastes or smells of chlorine
A carbon filter is designed to reduce it, at one tap or across the whole house.
You buy bottled water for drinking
A filtered tap at the kitchen usually works out cheaper and more convenient over time.
Scale builds up on the kettle and glassware
A sign of harder water. Ask your plumber what can be done for your supply.
The water looks cloudy or leaves grit
A sediment stage catches particles before they reach your taps and appliances.
You are on bore or rainwater
Non-mains sources usually need filtering, and the right setup depends on the source.
Your filter is overdue for a service
If an existing system is past its cartridge change, book a service and we can replace them.

Water filtration FAQs
Will a water filter get rid of the chlorine taste in Perth tap water?
A good carbon filter is designed to reduce the chlorine taste and smell that mains water can have. A whole-house system treats the water as it enters the home, so it reaches every tap and shower. An under-sink system treats the water at one tap, usually the kitchen. What a system reduces depends on the system and cartridge, so ask your plumber what a given system is rated to reduce.
Should I get a whole-house filter or an under-sink filter?
It comes down to what you want to improve. If you mainly want better drinking and cooking water, an under-sink filter feeding a separate tap at the kitchen is usually the simplest choice. If you want filtered water at every tap and shower, a whole-house system fitted where the water enters the property is the way to go. Your plumber can talk you through both and price each one.
Will a whole-house filter reduce my water pressure?
A whole-house system is sized to suit your home’s pipework and how much water your household uses, so it is chosen to keep good flow to every tap and shower. Flow can drop when cartridges are overdue and clogged, which is one reason to keep up the cartridge changes.
Do you install water filters in Perth?
Yes. Tap Doctor has been installing and servicing water filters across Perth since 1985, from single under-sink drinking filters to whole-of-house systems, and our customers have left more than 2,000 Google reviews. We also replace the cartridges in systems we did not install.
How often do the filter cartridges need replacing?
Cartridges have a working life and need changing so the system keeps doing its job. The interval depends on the cartridge type and how much water your household uses, so your plumber will tell you the schedule for your system. Tap Doctor can come back and replace the cartridges when they are due.
Can a filter help with Perth’s hard water and scale?
Scale on kettles, glassware and inside hot water systems comes from hardness in the water. A standard drinking or carbon filter is about taste and clarity rather than hardness. If scale is your main concern, tell us when you book and your plumber can talk through the options for your home.
Can you filter bore water or rainwater?
Garden bore water and rainwater are a different job to mains water, because they can carry sediment, iron or other matter. Tell us what your water source is when you call and we can talk through the options.
How much does a water filter system cost?
The price depends on the system you choose and the work needed to fit it, so your plumber gives you a firm price after looking at the job. There is no call-out fee during business hours, and our plumbers are licensed and insured.
