How a fridge is plumbed in
Plumbing in a fridge is a small job when the water is close by, and a bigger one when the line has to come through a ceiling or cabinetry. If a fridge line is leaking now, turn off the fridge tap behind the fridge, or the water at the meter, and call us. Our phones are answered 24/7.
The steps
- Find the supply: usually the cold water under the kitchen sink, or a pipe in the wall or ceiling.
- Run the line to the fridge recess, through cabinetry, the wall or the ceiling.
- Fit a fridge tap (isolation valve) where the line ends, plus any filter or pressure valve the fridge needs.
- Connect, flush and check: connect the fridge’s hose, flush the line and check every joint for leaks.

How is a fridge plumbed in?
A water line is run from the nearest cold water supply, often under the kitchen sink or through the wall or ceiling, to the fridge recess. A fridge tap (isolation valve) is fitted where the line ends, the fridge’s own hose is connected to it, and any filter or pressure valve the fridge needs goes in line. Then the line is flushed and the connections are checked for leaks.
Do I need a plumber to plumb in a fridge?
If there’s already a fridge tap within reach, connecting the fridge’s hose is usually simple. Running a new water line, adding a fridge tap or connecting into the water supply is plumbing work for a licensed plumber.
Where does the water for a fridge come from?
