Heat pumps use a refrigeration-type technology similar in nature to a reverse cycle air conditioner that is more efficient than traditional hot water systems. They use the latent heat from the air combined with compressor technology to heat the water.

This technology is typically 3-5x more effective than more traditional "heating element" style electric hot water systems and gas burning systems.
