Under-sink filters we install
A licensed Tap Doctor plumber can supply, fit and later service the filter at your kitchen sink.
Twin sediment and carbon filters
The most common setup: a sediment cartridge catches grit and rust, then a carbon cartridge reduces chlorine taste and smell. Two cartridges, each doing one job.
Single cartridge filters
A simpler, compact option where a single cartridge suits your water and the space in the cupboard.
A dedicated filtered tap
A small tap beside your mixer that only runs filtered water, so the cartridges last longer and you always know which water is which.
Filter mixer taps
One tap for hot, cold and filtered water, with the filter in the cupboard below. See Brita 3-way filter taps.
Fridge and ice maker lines
Filtered water to a plumbed-in fridge or ice maker. See fridge and ice maker plumbing.
Cartridge changes and repairs
We replace cartridges, fix leaking housings and reconnect filters, including on systems we did not install.
Why Perth homes filter the kitchen tap
Perth’s scheme (mains) water is treated to be safe to drink, but many households want it to taste better too.
Chlorine taste and smell
Mains water is disinfected before it reaches your home, and that treatment can leave a chlorine taste or smell. A carbon cartridge is designed to reduce it.
Better tea, coffee and ice
The water you drink and cook with is where taste matters most, which is exactly what an under-sink filter treats.
Grit and discolouration
Older pipes and mains work can let grit, rust or cloudiness through. A sediment cartridge catches it before it reaches your glass.
No more bottled water
Filtered water on tap means fewer bottles to buy, carry and throw away.
Under-sink or whole-house: which suits you?
Both do a good job. The right one depends on whether you want to improve what you drink and cook with, or treat the water for the whole home.
Under-sink (point of use)
- Filtered water at one tap, usually the kitchen
- Compact unit in the cupboard, often with its own filtered tap
- Good if you mainly want better drinking and cooking water
- Quicker and simpler to fit than a whole-house system
Whole-house (point of entry)
- Filtered water at every tap, shower and appliance
- Fitted where the supply enters the property
- Good if the whole supply has a taste, smell or sediment issue
- A larger job than a single filter
Want filtered water through the whole house? See whole-house water filtration.
How we fit an under-sink filter
A tidy install means the filter is easy to service and does not get in the way of the rest of the cupboard.
We check your sink and cupboard
Your plumber looks at the space, the existing isolation valves and the dishwasher connection, and where a filtered tap can go on your sink or bench.
A firm price before we start
You get a firm price for the filter, the tap and the install. Nothing starts until you say yes.
Mounted, connected and isolated
The unit is mounted on the cupboard wall and connected to the cold supply with its own isolation valve, so a cartridge change is quick and clean.
Flushed and checked
New cartridges are flushed before use and every connection is checked for leaks before we leave.
What affects the cost
We give you a firm price after looking at the job. These are the things that change it.
- The filter you chooseSingle and twin cartridge systems are rated for different jobs and have different up-front and ongoing costs.
- The tapA small dedicated filtered tap, a filter mixer, or connecting to a tap you already have.
- Your benchtopA filtered tap needs a hole in the sink or bench. Some surfaces take longer to drill than others.
- Space in the cupboardEasy access is quicker than a tight or crowded cupboard.
- Extra plumbingA new isolation valve or moving existing pipework can add to the job.
- Ongoing cartridgesFactor in replacement cartridges over the life of the filter.

Under-sink water filter FAQs
Will an under-sink filter get rid of the chlorine taste?
A carbon filter is designed to reduce the chlorine taste and smell that mains water can have, so the water from your filtered tap is nicer to drink and cook with. Reduction ratings depend on the cartridge, so ask your plumber what a given system is rated to reduce.
Do I need a separate filtered tap?
Most under-sink filters run to their own small tap beside your kitchen mixer, so filtered water is used for drinking and cooking and normal water for everything else. You can also choose a filter mixer, such as a Brita 3-way tap, which gives hot, cold and filtered water from one tap.
Will it fit in my sink cupboard?
Under-sink filters are compact and usually mount on the cupboard wall, beside the dishwasher connection and isolation valves. Your plumber checks the space before fitting and positions the unit so the cartridges are easy to reach.
Should I get an under-sink filter or a whole-house system?
If you mainly want better drinking and cooking water, an under-sink filter is the simpler choice. If you want filtered water at every tap and shower, look at whole-house water filtration. Your plumber can talk you through both.
How often do the cartridges need replacing?
Cartridges have a working life and need changing so the filter keeps doing its job. The interval depends on the cartridge type and how much water you use, so your plumber will tell you the schedule for your system. Tap Doctor can come back and replace them when they are due.
Can you service a filter you did not install?
Yes. We replace cartridges, fix leaking filter housings and reconnect filters on systems we did not fit, and we can move an existing filter across when you replace your kitchen tap.
How much does an under-sink filter cost?
The price depends on the filter and tap you choose and the work needed to fit them, so your plumber gives you a firm price after looking at the job. There is no call-out fee during business hours, and our plumbers are licensed and insured.
